So this time last week I was in London attending the Olympia Beauty Trade Show and Beauty Blogger Awards, an event I initially signed up for back in May/ June and literally spent months looking forward to. Signing up for both the trade show and the awards ceremony in advance allowed me entry to both areas for free, so all it cost me was the train fare there (which of course is a little steep coming from Hull!)
The event was running on Sunday 4th and Monday 5th October, but since I work full time Monday to Friday I was unfortunately only able to attend on the Sunday. So for those non-bloggers reading this I will start with the Olympia Beauty Trade Show…
The Trade Show itself took place at Olympia Conference Centre, Hammersmith. It is a fabulous building and one that is perfectly suited to the occasion! In terms of accessibility Olympia does have its own overland train station directly outside (Kensington Olympia) and as far as I am aware there are parking facilities nearby for anyone brave enough to be driving around London. I personally changed at Earls Court on the Underground and took a short 5 minute overland journey down to Olympia. All in all my journey from Kings Cross to Olympia took around 45 minutes.
You must take a copy of your e-mail confirmation to exchange for your pass. Upon arrival my barcode was scanned and I was given a pass detailing who I was and the company I had come from, a fantastic way of making networking easier and helping exhibitors tailor their pitches accordingly. As a blogger I was rather excitingly identified as “PRESS” so strolling around the exhibition it was perfectly acceptable for me to be taking lots of photographs and asking brands lots of questions so I could feature them here on Jessica KG.
Most of the brands exhibiting at the Trade Show were offering demonstrations,
discounts and introductory offers to anyone interested and products were on sale literally in their thousands. You were able to buy on both a trade and individual scale so if you wanted stock for your Salon you could take advantage of the discounted rates, but similarly if you only wanted individual purchases there was that option too. There was literally something for everyone – from independent bloggers to large chain salons, cosmetic Doctors to independent beauticians and just your average beauty fanatic – so don’t be put off if you are not a qualified MUA or Beautician!
Workshops and presentations were running throughout the day providing tips and advice on safety, how to best use a particular product and the experiences of fellow professionals. The event really is a must for any beauty enthusiast, trainee or professional wanting to keep their eye on what new treatments and products are on the market, to top up their knowledge or just to enjoy a fantastic day with like minded lippie lovers.
I spent most of my day with fellow blogger, events organiser and multiple business owner Lauren. Lauren and I both wanted quite different things from the event but everyone we encountered was accommodating and helpful towards us both. As an independent blogger my agenda for the day was to discover new products whilst keeping my spending to a very limited budget! Lauren was there in a business capacity to source new brands for her events and generate interest for future collaborations. Not once was anyone dismissive, rude or disinterested in what either of us had to say, in fact most were really enthused to find that we were bloggers and interested in working with them in the future.
I must give a special mention at this point to the following brands who I purchased products from…. DrPAWPAW, Sleep In Rollers, Boozi Cosmetics and B Cosmetics. I will of course be releasing separate reviews of each of your products very soon, but a huge thank you for taking the time to discuss them with me before purchase.
Acknowledgements also to Freshly Baked London, SiennaX, Gina Akers of Magnitone and Carole of LTH Therapies who it was lovely to meet with and chat to on the day.
So onto the….
Despite arriving at around 12:30 (2.5 hours after the doors officially opened) Lauren and I were still amongst the first 250 bloggers to enter the exclusive blogger event so were handed goodie bags upon arrival. After strolling along the red carpet and collecting our blogger badges we entered the exclusive VIP area destined for bloggers. Numerous brands were exhibiting and showcasing their products whilst presentations and workshops were delivered by those who are already well established in the blogging world. There were 10 workshops running each day covering everything from how to have glowing skin to whether you should disclose fee paying in your blogs and vlogs.
Antonia Mariconda was the host for both days, looking stunning as always and giving me some SERIOUS hair envy.
Inside the blogger awards area you could have your teeth whitened for free by Megawhite if you had over 10,000 followers (which granted very few of us do!) or a relaxing lava shell massage by the lovely Carole. Thankfully Carole didn’t have a followers quota so I was able to sit back and relax whilst she worked her magic.
One of my favourite things is networking at blogger events. It’s great to catch up with bloggers you have been following for a while and also meeting new ones. You can guarantee that the people you meet at these events will be like minded and where your normal friends would sit yawning at your talk of SEO and lightroom filters, blogger friends will happily sit chatting about literally anything blogging or beauty related.
My day wouldn’t of course have been complete without some blogger selfies in the NYX cosmetics photo booth with Lauren, Abi and Jess (2nd Jess – I am not referring to myself in the 3rd person!) Us bloggers have many a twitter friend who we talk to on a regular basis so it is always pretty exciting when you can all finally meet up and cramp together in a Photo Booth to pose. I have to say at this point that if you are ever thinking of going into a Photo Booth without Abi then don’t bother. She literally has the directional posing flair down to an art form …..
4. Wind (the photo booth effect and not the flatulence sort)
The awards themselves were short and sweet (as were the thank you speeches!) but there were some very worthy winners who were recognised for their blogging achievements to date and presented with beautiful glass awards in true celeb fashion.
For anyone who didn’t attend this year, it would be great to see more faces there next year. The awards were a great way to get together and celebrate those little corners of the internet we all work so hard on!
…..So until next year, keep on blogging beauties ; )
