After trialling Tropic Skincare Body Smooth last month I totally fell in love with Tropic as a brand and their core values. I love that all of their products are 100% natural, cruelty free, vegan and free from any nasties like sulphates, parabens and microbeads and genuinely couldn’t wait to get started on trialling more products from the range. I was lucky enough to travel to Morocco to stay with a friend earlier this month so it seemed the perfect time to trial Tropic’s mineral sun care range and see whether I’d be just as impressed with that as I had been their founding product. So here’s everything you need to know about the range and what Tropic Skincare sun care has to offer…
Why mineral sun care?
So you may be asking yourself why you would want to make the switch to mineral sun care and why this
differs from your usual sun care range of choice? Well… as an environmentally conscious brand Tropic Skincare recognises that our conventional sun car products may actually be extremely harmful to our oceans, coastline and marine life. Oxybenzone has been linked to bleaching up to 10% of coral reefs around the world. It is an ingredient that is very commonly found in sun care products and with four to six thousand tonnes of sunscreen being washed off swimmers and into the sea each year, it is not difficult to see how incredibly damaging this could be for the coastline that we all love and admire so much.
The Tropic Skincare sun care range is mineral based and kind to both your skin and the environment. It contains zine oxide and titanium dioxide which provide complete UV protection from the sun, without doing any damage. Pretty cool eh? So here’s all about the products I tried from the Tropic Skincare sun care range…
Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection SPF 30 and 50
Tropic Skincare kindly sent me their Sun Care Discovery kit which retails at £40 and contains:
- Sun Soothe Cooling Aftersun Lotion
- Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection SPF 30
- Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection SPF 50
You can additionally add the Sun Balm SPF 50 for an extra £10. This normally retails at £16 so is worth including in the package if you have a tendency to burn on your nose, ears, lips etc (but more about that below).
The Skin Shade Mineral Sun Protection is a thick and rich SPF cream which is easy to apply and absorbs very quickly without any oily or sticky residue. When you first apply the cream it is white/ cream in colour and has a super thick consistency so looks like it isn’t going to absorb very well, however within a minute or so it is fully absorbed and you can get dressed and go about your day.
Even though I am dark haired and have quite olive toned skin, I do tend to catch the sun quite easily and have a tendency to burn quite easily during the first few days of sun exposure. Whilst I was in Morocco the temperatures were around 27 degrees without any real cloud or breeze, so I applied the SPF 30 cream each morning before going out for the day. On my first day I went paddle boarding in the ocean all afternoon and did not re-apply cream at any point. Whilst my skin felt a little tight towards the end of the day from being in the sun and salt water all day, it wasn’t burned and was perfectly hydrated. Admittedly I was a little silly in not reapplying my cream, however I was really impressed with the protection the product offered. I didn’t feel sticky or sweaty at any stage and it didn’t clog my pores at all. Similarly, I wasn’t itchy or sensitive to the product (which I have been in the past with other sun care ranges). Overall I thought it was pretty FAB.
The SPF mineral sun protection retails at £28 for 200ml and can be bought here.
Next up is the handy handbag or pocket sized sun balm. There’s no real hidden surprises here, it is really exactly as described; a handy quick little balm offering easy to apply SPF coverage throughout the day. I tend to burn across my hairline, nose and the tops of my ears so I loved having this product in my handbag to top up my coverage throughout the day. It is lightweight, easily absorbed and contains tamanu oil which helps the heal and repair the skin. Perfect for those areas that catch the sun all day.
The Tropic Skincare sun care balm retails at £16 for 20ml and comes in solid form so will last forever. It and can be bought here.
Hands down and without doubt my fave product from the Tropic Skincare sun care range! This fabulous product offers SPF facial protection whilst giving your skin a little bit of coverage, healthy glow and much needed all day moisture whilst you’re in the sun. I personally NEVER tan my face and always wear SPF under my make up (even when I am in the UK). When I go away I don’t like wearing make up as I hate my skin feeling congested and clogged, but do still like having a bit of a glow. For me this was the perfect product for dealing with all of those things as it protects the skin from harmful UVA and UVB rays, contains kauai and raucous oils which are rich in omega fatty acids to help to keep the skin hydrated and gave my skin a little hint of colour without me looking like I had any make up on.
Helpfully the skin tint comes in two shades; light/ medium and medium/ dark and helps to balance out the skin tone and cover any minor imperfections. I used the light/ medium during my trip to Morocco however I think I may pick up the darker one for when I go to Las Vegas later this year. The lighter shade was perfect for my few days in Morocco however once I’ve spent some time in the sun I do tend to go a bit darker so I think I would need the darker shade for a longer break away. It was lightweight, long lasting and gave my skin a beautiful dewy finish all day long. Definitely a future holiday essential for me!
The tinted skin shade mineral facial sun protection retails at £24 for 50ml and can be bought here.
Last but by no means least, the Tropic Skincare sun care aftersun. It contains aloe vera, vitamin E, eucalyptus and menthol oil which work in perfect combination to hydrate and calm the skin after sun exposure. I kept mine in the fridge for an extra cooling feel when applying after a hot shower and a full day in the sunshine. The product is so fresh and light, that it seemed so perfect for my summer evenings. It absorbed quickly and was not greasy at all.
The only down side for me was that the aftersun wasn’t quite hydrating enough for me so my skin did feel a little dry later in the evenings before bed. I do like a really rich moisturiser, especially whilst I am away, so I think I do need something a little richer when I go away.
The sun soothe cooling aftersun lotion retails at £10 for 100ml and can be bought here..
Overall I was really impressed with the Tropic Skincare sun care range. I loved the concept of using 100%
natural ingredients on my skin whilst on holiday and being exposed to sun, sea and sand all day. It seemed that little bit kinder to not be adding further distress to my skin with synthetic chemicals from alternative sun screens. The only down side for me would be the price tag, however I generally only go away on one summer holiday a year so I do tend to spend the extra money on good quality products (I use Clarins at the moment) to make sure my skin is properly looked after and protected. I would definitely buy the Sun Care Discovery Kit which contains a smaller selection of the Tropic Skincare Sun Care products and I think represents great value for money, especially if you are going on a shorter trip to somewhere sunny.
I am really grateful to the team at Tropic for sending me this fabulous range to trial on my trip, I really have enjoyed every minute of using it! If you do try it I’d love to know your thoughts on it too. Similarly, if you have tried other Tropic Skincare products I’d love to know your thoughts. I’ve heard such good things about the new hair care range and self tanning drops so I think they will next on my hit list…
